Abstract

A new report discusses research findings on Coxiella burnetii, a bacterium that causes the infectious zoonotic disease known as Q fever. The report focuses on the relationship between C. burnetii infection and reproductive disorders in cattle, including abortion, stillbirth, perinatal mortality, weak calves, retained fetal membranes, metritis/endometritis, and infertility/sub-fertility. The systematic review analyzed 61 eligible studies and found evidence supporting a deleterious role for Q fever in ASPW complex, retained fetal membranes, and infertility/sub-fertility, but the evidence for metritis/endometritis was unclear. The report concludes that further research is needed, particularly involving larger animal populations and more controlled settings, with more precise definitions of reproductive parameters and robust diagnostic methodologies.
