Abstract

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Senate to reject the proposed N15 billion budget for the construction of a new residence for the vice president. SERAP argues that the country cannot afford wasteful spending, especially during a debt crisis. They also criticize the planned N2.8 billion budget for media and publicity for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). SERAP urges the Senate to fulfill its oversight function and remove these expenditures from the budget. They also recommend that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) investigate the initial allocation for the project.
