Abstract

The New York copper market experienced a record squeeze, but the situation has improved as CME Group Inc. raised trading margins and copper prices on the London Metal Exchange increased. The spread between the Comex and LME copper contracts, which had reached over $1,000 a ton, narrowed to about $400. This dislocation in the market has led to efforts to redirect copper supplies to the US. While the situation has eased, there are still signs of significant stress in the market.
