A recent study conducted in South Africa found that the country has the highest reported prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) globally. The study, which took place from 2015 to 2022 at eight study sites in four provinces, included 3,033 children. Of those children, 309 were diagnosed with FAS. The highest prevalence was found in the Northern Cape Province, while the lowest was in the Eastern Cape Province.
