Abstract
- This article provides a comprehensive overview of the life and impact of Jane Marshall Dillon, a highly respected horsemanship teacher. Dillon's Junior Equitation School in Virginia had a profound influence on numerous riders, including notable Olympic athletes Joe Fargis and Kathy Kusner. Dillon's teaching philosophy centered around kindness towards horses and prioritizing their well-being. Her program encompassed various aspects of horsemanship, riding, and care, as well as engaging activities like foxhunting. Dillon's legacy endures through the Jane Marshall Dillon Perpetual Trophy and a Facebook group dedicated to her former students. Additionally, her book, "School for Young Riders," offers valuable insights into her teaching methods and remains relevant today. The article also highlights Dillon's commitment to making horseback riding accessible to all, regardless of financial means, by purchasing affordable horses and providing opportunities for students from the local community. Her emphasis on good horsemanship and observation left a lasting impact on her students, such as Joe Fargis, who continues to carry her teachings with him. Dillon's significant contributions to the sport were recognized through her induction into the Virginia Horse Shows Association Hall of Fame and the Washington International Horse Show Hall of Fame.
