Abstract

This article discusses the various unofficial nicknames given to features on the Moon. While the International Astronomical Union (IAU) establishes official names for lunar features, astronomers and astronauts have also given unofficial names based on their appearance. Some examples include the Steppingstones, the Headlights, the Lunar Good-Luck Charm, the Liebig Wall, Hill's Waterfall, the Spider, the Lunar S, Valentine Dome, Heart of the Moon, the Lunar X, the Marius Hills and Tadpole, Straight Wall and Ancient Thebit, the Guardians, the Railroad Tracks, Ghosts of Procellarum, the Fireman's Hat, Thor's Hammer, the Cobra Head, the Ninja Star, and the Golden Handle. These unofficial names add familiarity and whimsy to the Moon's landscape. [Extracted from the article]
