Abstract
- The article is a book review of "Civil service systems in East and Southeast Asia" by Park, C-M., Han, Y., and Chang, Y. The book aims to provide a characterization of the civil service systems in 10 countries in the region, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Each chapter in the book describes the historical development, organizational structure, recruitment practices, employment types, performance assessment, and other aspects of the civil service in each country. The review acknowledges some methodological challenges and suggests the development of an analytical framework to facilitate further discussion. Overall, the book serves as a useful starting point for studying civil service systems in non-western contexts and provides researchers and students with a basis for future research on the topic.
