Abstract

This article examines the relationship between French Freemasonry and the Atlantic slave trade and slavery from 1770 to 1848. The author's research reveals the connections between Freemasonry and slave trading ports, as well as the involvement of Freemasons in abolitionist circles. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding the historical context and raises questions about the affiliation between Freemasonry and the slave trade. It also discusses the role of Freemasonry in the abolitionist struggle in France during the 19th century, highlighting the progressive stance of Freemasons in Paris and the gradual inclusion of men of color in lodges. The French Revolution played a significant role in raising awareness within Freemasonry about the importance of liberty. [Extracted from the article]
