Abstract

This article discusses the role of polemics and controversies in environmental management as a source of local knowledge for researchers in the field of environmental science. It uses the recent controversy surrounding the opening of the Adige-Garda diversion tunnel in Italy as an illustrative case. The article emphasizes the importance of incorporating local knowledge into scientific research and suggests that scientists should use public controversies as an opportunity to improve science communication.
