Abstract

The article presents a study which described the prevalence of acute decline in ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults presenting to the emergency department (ED) with suspected pneumonia. Topics discussed include demographic characteristics of older ED patients with suspected pneumonia, and limitations of the study, and the need of emergency physicians to evaluate for acute decline during their treatment and disposition decisions.
