Abstract

A new report from Moulay Ismail University in Morocco discusses research on antifungals and the search for novel antimicrobials to combat antibiotic resistance. The study focuses on the evaluation of essential oils from Origanum compactum and Origanum elongatum, testing their antimicrobial activity and synergistic effects with commercial antibiotics. The essential oils showed antibacterial action against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with certain antibiotics exhibiting synergistic effects. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations suggest that these effects may result from the oils' ability to target the same bacterial proteins or facilitate access to target sites. The study highlights the potential of these essential oils, particularly those high in thymol and (E)-caryophyllene, as effective therapeutic approaches against multidrug-resistant bacteria.
