Abstract

A recent study conducted at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, examined the incidence and onset of refeeding syndrome (RFS) in children aged 0-59 months with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The study found that RFS is a life-threatening complication that is underdiagnosed and under-researched. Children who developed RFS had lower levels of electrolytes, elevated international normalized ratio (INR), dehydration, diarrhea, and urinary tract infections (UTIs) upon admission. The study suggests that recognizing these factors as red flags for RFS could lead to improved outcomes and further investigation is needed. [Extracted from the article]
