Abstract

Plastic pollution is a significant problem that affects the entire life cycle of plastic, from production to disposal. Workers in plastic production plants face health issues due to exposure to toxic substances. The manufacturing process involves the use of undisclosed toxic additives and processing aids. Plastic can release harmful chemicals into food and beverages, especially when exposed to heat or acidic conditions. Recycling, although promoted as a solution, also carries risks due to the presence of toxins in plastic. A report by Toxic Links highlights the hazardous chemicals used in plastic production, and it found that recycled plastics also contain harmful chemicals beyond acceptable levels. Workers in plastic recycling are directly exposed to cancer-causing substances. Some oil, gas, and plastic-producing countries are hindering negotiations for a global treaty to address plastic pollution and its impact on human health. While the EU has regulations in place to govern chemical use, India lacks a similar regulation. The country needs a national-level policy to regulate the manufacturing industry and ensure transparency. [Extracted from the article]
