Abstract

A recent study conducted in Goroka, Papua New Guinea, aimed to understand the burden and clinical features of typhoid fever in children. The study included 98 children admitted to Goroka Hospital with clinical features of typhoid. The majority of patients were from the Goroka District, and many lacked access to treated water and proper sanitation facilities. The study found that neuropsychiatric symptoms, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and anemia were common among the patients. All blood cultures tested positive for Salmonella typhi, and the isolates were sensitive to certain antibiotics. The researchers concluded that prompt public health actions and the consideration of the conjugate typhoid vaccine are necessary to reduce the burden of typhoid infection in Papua New Guinea.
