Abstract

This article is a review of Dolf Rami's book "Names and Context: A Use-Sensitive Philosophical Account." The book explores the semantics of names and argues for a new "Use-sensitive" account that views names as primarily singular terms with their own unique semantics. The book addresses various challenges and discusses the referential and non-referential uses of names, as well as the determination of their referents. It also introduces the distinction between truth-conditional and use-conditional meaning in the semantic debate on names. While the book provides a comprehensive analysis of name uses and defends the Millian orthodoxy, it could have delved deeper into certain philosophical questions and issues.
