Abstract

The African National Congress (ANC), which has been in power in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, is facing potential trouble as voters head to the polls. South Africa's economy has not improved under the ANC's recent term, with low economic growth, high unemployment rates, and a high murder rate. Recent polls suggest that the ANC may lose its parliamentary majority for the first time, with support for opposition parties like the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) increasing. However, the ANC may still benefit from the opposition's lack of unity. Former President Jacob Zuma's new party, the uMkhonto we Sizwe, poses a threat, but its support is uncertain. If the ANC falls below a certain level of support, President Cyril Ramaphosa may have to form a government with the DA or EFF, which may not lead to a prosperous future for South Africa.
