Abstract

Researchers from the University of Iceland have developed a multivariable prediction model to determine the need for bone marrow sampling in individuals with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). MGUS and smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) are precursor conditions to multiple myeloma and related disorders. The model accurately predicts the probability of having 10% or greater bone marrow plasma cells, which indicates a higher risk for progression and the need for specialist management. This model may help defer unnecessary bone marrow sampling and referral to hematology. [Extracted from the article]
