Abstract
- Researchers at the Federal University of Technology in Parana, Brazil have developed a method for assessing and monitoring iodine status using total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF). Traditionally, iodine status is assessed through urine samples using Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), which requires complex sample preparations and the use of toxic chemicals. However, recent studies have shown a correlation between urinary iodine content and iodine present in saliva. The TXRF method offers a fast, simple, and accurate alternative to traditional methods and could be particularly helpful for patients undergoing 131I treatment and in epidemiological field studies to determine iodine deficiency/excess in children and pregnant women.
