Abstract

A recent study conducted at Cooper University Hospital in New Jersey found that there has been a significant increase in cases of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among pregnant women, potentially due to the rise in opioid use. The study focused on infants born to mothers with a prenatal diagnosis of HCV and found that a significant number of these infants were either not identified at birth or did not receive adequate testing for HCV exposure. The researchers concluded that more work needs to be done to improve the documentation of HCV exposure at birth and follow-up testing to prevent the missed diagnosis of congenitally acquired HCV.
