Abstract

The article looks back at fractional currency as a proposed solution for coin shortages in the mid-1960s. Background information is provided about the unauthorized private issues of tokens, promissory notes, store cards and other improvisations, and the use of postage currency following the disappearance of minor exchange media in the Civil War era and its suspension after passage of the third Legal Tender act in 1863. Also noted is a bill introduced in 1965 that would authorize scrip printing.
