Abstract
- A study conducted by researchers at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has provided new insights into the development of Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a multifactorial environmental disease. The research found that exposure to aristolochic acids (AA) and the resulting DNA adduct formation are key factors in the development of BEN. The study also revealed that coexposure to arsenic, cadmium, and iron increased DNA adduct formation, while coexposure to calcium and copper decreased it. These findings shed light on the endemic nature of BEN and the role of DNA damage in its nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity. [Extracted from the article]
