Abstract
- Researchers from the Department of Pediatrics in Siena, Italy conducted a study to assess the prevalence of ankyloglossia (a condition where the lingual frenulum interferes with tongue functionality) among healthy newborns and its correlation with breastfeeding difficulties. The study included 190 infants, of which 11.05% had a high MLFPI score (indicating ankyloglossia). The data showed that a high MLFPI score was associated with breastfeeding difficulties at one and six months. The study suggests that in cases of ankyloglossia, referral to experienced personnel for support or surgical evaluation may be necessary. The rate of surgical removal of the frenulum was low in the cohort studied. [Extracted from the article]
