Abstract

This article discusses the healthcare system in England for people with intellectual disabilities. Despite publicly funded healthcare, individuals with intellectual disabilities still face health disparities in the United Kingdom. The article examines key legislation that impacts the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, such as the UK Equality Act 2010 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005. It also explores the role of deinstitutionalization and the shift to community living for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The research reviews programs that have been implemented to address the health disparities experienced by this population. Additionally, the article discusses recent changes to healthcare organization in the UK, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the implementation of the Valuing People white paper.
