Abstract

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Colorado has overcome various obstacles, such as fires, mudslides, avalanches, and the COVID-19 pandemic, and has continued to thrive. The railroad achieved record-breaking ridership in 2022 and 2023 and is currently converting its steam locomotives from coal to oil to reduce the risk of wildfires. Additionally, the company has expanded its contract-repair business and recently completed a new bridge over the Animas River. Despite these challenges, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad remains a popular tourist attraction and a resilient company. The article also discusses the railroad's transition to oil-burning and diesel locomotives, its use of doubleheading to increase capacity, and its expansion into contract work and consulting for other railroads.
