Abstract

The synthesis, characterization of trans-[Cr(N<subscript>2</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>(depe)<subscript>2</subscript>] (1) is described. 1 and trans-[Cr(N<subscript>2</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>(dmpe)<subscript>2</subscript>] (2) catalyze the reduction of N<subscript>2</subscript> to N<subscript>2</subscript>H<subscript>4</subscript> and NH<subscript>3</subscript> in THF using SmI<subscript>2</subscript> and H<subscript>2</subscript>O or ethylene glycol as proton sources. 2 produces the highest total fixed N for a molecular Cr catalyst to date.
