Abstract

This article explores the battles over public history and the transformation of urban public history, focusing on examples from Germantown in Philadelphia and the Boston National Historical Park. The authors argue that good urban history should incorporate collective memory and present diverse perspectives and time periods. They discuss the relationship between urban renewal and historic preservation in Boston and Germantown, noting how preservationists often supported urban renewal efforts despite the destruction of historic neighborhoods. The article also examines the racial dynamics of preservation and raises questions about the role of preservation in gentrification. Overall, it emphasizes the importance of community engagement and inclusive storytelling in the practice of history. [Extracted from the article]
