Abstract
- The family Equidae (the equines) includes a single extant genus – Equus. The family includes horses, zebras, donkeys, and the extinct tarpan and quagga. All of these animals are large herbivorous mammals that can interbreed with one another, usually producing sterile offspring. The aim of this study was to collect information and systematize knowledge about hybrid equines. The paper contains information about genetic differences, inheritance of parental traits depending on the type of hybrid, fertility of hybrids, and assessment of character in comparison to traits specific to the parents. The practical use of hybrids in various parts of the world, often in highly inaccessible areas where technologically advanced means of transport have proven ineffective, is discussed as well.
