Abstract
- The article discusses the representation of women, particularly women of color, in colonial Latin American art. It highlights the scarcity of surviving images of women from this period and the limited individualized representations of Black and Indigenous women. The article emphasizes the importance of archival research in uncovering the complex ways in which women created, commissioned, collected, and displayed art objects. It also explores the challenges faced by scholars in studying the role of women in art history, particularly in a discipline that historically centered around European male subjects. The article concludes by emphasizing the need to examine the ways in which women of color responded to and resisted the racial and gendered hierarchies present in colonial art representations.
