Abstract

Mitri Raheb's book, "Decolonizing Palestine: The Land, The People, The Bible," offers a historical and theological critique of Christian Zionism and presents an alternative vision that includes all peoples in Palestine/Israel. Raheb challenges Christians in Europe and the United States to confront political theologies that distort the biblical text and mask power imbalances between Israel and the Palestinians. The book also addresses Palestinian Christians and Muslims, offering a new understanding of biblical notions of "treasured people" and the covenant with Abraham. Raheb expands the understanding of Christian Zionism to include post-Holocaust liberal theologians and explores the connection between Christian Zionism and conservative Evangelicals in the United States. The book argues that Christian Zionism is a political-theological practice that supports Jewish settler colonialism using biblical and theological constructs. Raheb also reinterprets the concepts of divine election and the inheritance of the land, emphasizing the experiences of the meek and oppressed. While the book provides important insights, there are some areas where further qualification and expansion of arguments could be beneficial. Overall, "Decolonizing Palestine" offers a message of hope and restoration for oppressed peoples in the face of ongoing conflict. [Extracted from the article]
