Abstract

A research report from Poznan University of Medical Sciences in Poland discusses the synthesis and evaluation of gold nanorods coated with PEG and their mixtures with pheophorbide a for use in photodynamic therapy against Staphylococcus aureus. The efficiency of singlet oxygen generation varied depending on the type of PEG polymer used for coating the nanorods, with the highest efficiency observed for PEG (10k) at a specific concentration. The mixtures of PEG-coated nanorods with pheophorbide a showed a significant reduction in bacteria growth when exposed to specific wavelengths of irradiation. However, no strong bactericidal effect was observed at a different wavelength. The research has been peer-reviewed and published in the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry.
