Abstract

A study conducted by the National University of Singapore highlights the potential pitfalls and errors in lymph node fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for the diagnosis of lymphoma. While FNAC is an accurate and cost-effective method for diagnosing infectious or reactive conditions and metastatic malignancy, there are differing views on its role in diagnosing lymphoma. The study emphasizes the importance of pathologists being aware of potential interpretational errors, false-negative and false-positive diagnoses, errors in tumor classification, and off-radar entities. The researchers recommend a triple approach to the diagnostic workup, including clinicopathologic correlation, attention to cytomorphology, and judicious use of ancillary tests.
