Abstract

This article explores the concept of canons within the Islamic tradition and how they are subject to change and critique. The author discusses the juridical canon and the canon of Islamic philosophy as distinct from each other, highlighting the need to engage with different canons to gain a comprehensive understanding of Islam. The article also examines the populist Islamist canon and the importance of self-reflection and critique in promoting social transformation. Additionally, the author emphasizes the significance of adab and akhlaq literature in addressing contemporary concerns regarding intolerance. The article concludes by discussing the context-dependent nature of critique and the ways in which Islamic ideas and practices are contested, rejected, reshaped, and embraced in various contexts.
