Abstract

The article discusses the importance of allyship in generating inclusion in the workplace. It highlights that well-intentioned managers and executives often feel paralyzed by the fear of getting it wrong. However, new research suggests that acts of allyship are more appreciated by people from underrepresented groups than majority groups might think. The article provides examples of high-profile allyship misfires and presents findings from 10 studies that demonstrate the underestimation of allyship appreciation. It suggests that organizations can encourage allyship by recalibrating expectations, providing training on appreciation, and surveying underrepresented group members to determine the most effective forms of allyship.
