Abstract
- This article provides a summary of the top 10 papers in diabetes and metabolic disorders published in 2023, as selected by the editors of the European Heart Journal. The focus is on practical papers that address the identification and management of patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The article highlights the 2023 European Society of Cardiology guidelines for managing cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes, which emphasize the evaluation and identification of patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease. The guidelines also introduce a new score, called SCORE2-Diabetes, to estimate the 10-year risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes. Other topics covered include the association of loneliness and social isolation with cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes, the efficacy and safety of the SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin in patients with heart failure and peripheral artery disease, the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in cardiovascular prevention, and the impact of non-statin lipid-lowering agents on the risk of developing new-onset diabetes. Overall, these papers provide valuable insights into the management and prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes. [Extracted from the article]
