Abstract
- A recent study conducted by the Department of Nephrology in India aimed to understand the kidney histopathology in cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) following snakebite envenomation. The researchers analyzed 28 studies that met the eligibility criteria, including a total of 534 renal biopsies. The most common cause of AKI was found to be Russell's viper bite, and the most common histopathological finding was acute tubular necrosis. Lesions such as acute cortical necrosis and thrombotic microangiopathy were associated with poor outcomes. The study highlights the importance of renal biopsies in guiding prognosis and increasing knowledge about post-snakebite AKI pathophysiology. [Extracted from the article]
