Abstract

A study conducted at Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, investigated the association between gene polymorphisms and chronic periodontitis (CP) in an Iranian population. The study found that certain gene polymorphisms, specifically MMP-1 (-1607 1G/2G) rs1799750, MMP-3 (-1171 5A/6A) rs3025058, and MMP-7 (-181 A/G) rs11568818, were significantly different between individuals with CP and periodontally healthy individuals. The presence of the 2G allele in the MMP-1 (-1607) rs1799750 genotype increased susceptibility to CP, while the presence of the 6A allele in the MMP-3 (-1171) rs3025058 genotype showed lower susceptibility to CP. The researchers concluded that clinicians should consider these gene polymorphisms when planning treatment for chronic periodontitis. [Extracted from the article]
