Search for Novel Phases in Y-Ba-Cu-O Family.

Abstract

In order to search for possible residual minor phases in the Y-Ba-Cu-O family, powdered mixtures of Y<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> + BaCO<subscript>3</subscript> + CuO and, independently, superconducting compound YBa<subscript>2</subscript>Cu<subscript>3</subscript>O<subscript>7−x</subscript> have been treated in evacuated cells and elevated temperatures. YBa<subscript>2</subscript>Cu<subscript>3</subscript>O<subscript>7−x</subscript> was reduced to YBa<subscript>2</subscript>Cu<subscript>3</subscript>O<subscript>5</subscript> by use of the special home-designed Taconis–Knudsen vacuum device. Subsequent doping by oxygen converts produced insulator YBa<subscript>2</subscript>Cu<subscript>3</subscript>O<subscript>5</subscript> to semiconductor or metal YBa<subscript>2</subscript>Cu<subscript>3</subscript>O<subscript>5+x</subscript> (0 < x < 0.3). In addition to YBa<subscript>2</subscript>Cu<subscript>3</subscript>O<subscript>5</subscript>, 0.05 volume percent of the minor delafossite phase Y<subscript>2</subscript>Cu<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>4</subscript> was spotted in the powder mixture 1/2 Y<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> + 2BaCO<subscript>3</subscript> + 6Cu<subscript>2</subscript>O, heated up to 818 °C in an inert gas atmosphere. An attempt to prepare the insulating bulk delafossite samples was successful, and subsequent doping by oxygen produced novel metallic phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
