Abstract

This article provides a historical overview of electronic displays, with a focus on advancements made in the 1980s and 1990s. It traces the development of liquid-crystal 'light valves' in the 1930s, which laid the groundwork for the use of liquid crystals in television and other systems. The article highlights the introduction of twisted nematic liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) in the 1970s, which revolutionized digital watches and calculators. It also discusses the emergence of thin-film transistor (TFT) LCDs and their application in pocket TVs and laptops. The article concludes by mentioning the rise of plasma TVs and the decline of cathode-ray tube (CRT) technology in the late 1990s. Additionally, it mentions the Sharp EL-805, the world's first LCD calculator released in 1973, which marked a significant advancement in calculator technology. [Extracted from the article]
