Abstract
- The article explores the archaeological findings at the Clark-Watson site in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, which provide valuable insights into the lives of settlers in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The site's connection to trade networks and aspirations to be a major port are highlighted. The article emphasizes the importance of studying and displaying overlooked archaeological collections, even without professional excavation information, as valuable resources for understanding local history and fostering a sense of community. The collection includes a variety of artifacts such as tobacco pipes, ceramics, architectural materials, and personal items, which offer insights into the material culture and history of the area. The artifacts reflect the trade networks and cosmopolitan tastes of the inhabitants of colonial Perth Amboy. The collection is currently housed at Monmouth University, with select artifacts on display at a museum in Perth Amboy. It serves as a tangible reminder of the city's early history and its connection to the present, telling stories about immigration and trade that are relevant to the diverse population of Perth Amboy.
