Abstract
- A recent study conducted by the University of Leipzig has revealed new findings in veterinary research. The study focused on a case of cerebral baylisascariosis in a rainbow lorikeet in a German zoo. The researchers found that the raccoon roundworm, Baylisascaris procyonis, can cause a meningoencephalitis in avian species, including rainbow lorikeets. This is the first known case of this condition in Old World parrots in Germany. The study suggests that cerebral baylisascariosis should be considered as a potential diagnosis in zoo and pet birds with neurological symptoms who have had contact with raccoons or raccoon feces in Germany.
