Abstract

A recent study conducted by Laval University in Quebec, Canada, has found that inhibiting the protein PCSK9 can protect mice from food allergies. PCSK9 is known for its role in familial hypercholesterolemia, but its involvement in immune responses and food allergies was previously unknown. The researchers discovered that both genetic deficiency and pharmacological inhibition of PCSK9 prevented symptoms of gliadin-induced food allergy in mice. Importantly, this protective effect was independent of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR). These findings suggest that PCSK9 inhibition may be a potential therapeutic approach for food allergies. [Extracted from the article]
