Abstract

This article summarizes the findings of two randomized controlled trials that examined the impact of immediate smoking cessation support during lung cancer screening. The trials found that providing smoking cessation support alongside targeted lung health checks increased long-term smoking abstinence rates. Participants who received immediate support had higher quit rates compared to those who received usual care, and these results were sustained at 12 months. The study suggests that offering smoking cessation interventions with pharmacotherapy immediately after attending a lung health check can lead to sustained increases in quit rates. The study also highlights the importance of supporting underrepresented groups, such as the most deprived quintile, in engaging with lung health screening. [Extracted from the article]
