Abstract

France has the highest government expenditures as a percentage of GDP among OECD countries, allowing for generous subsidies to businesses and individuals. For example, French businesses received €157 billion in subsidies in 2019, amounting to over €2,400 per capita. The French government also provides subsidies for education, including free schooling, subsidies for school supplies, meals, and transportation. Higher education is mostly free, with registration fees waived for scholarship recipients. The government also offers subsidies for electric cars, bicycles, and public transportation. However, critics argue that these subsidies contribute to France's increasing national debt and encourage unnecessary consumption. [Extracted from the article]
