Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Hospital Authority in Hong Kong aimed to evaluate the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in order to provide evidence-based recommendations for incorporating AF screening into regular diabetic risk assessments. The study found that among 2015 DM patients in primary care, the prevalence of AF was 1.9%, with the prevalence increasing with age. The researchers also evaluated the performance of an automated blood pressure measurement device, Microlife WatchBP Office AFIB, as a screening tool for AF detection and found it to have a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 97.9%. The study concluded that AF screening using this device could be considered a standard assessment in regular diabetic risk assessments in primary care settings. [Extracted from the article]
