Abstract
- A study conducted at the University of Georgia has found that an intranasal vaccine for Lyme disease provides protection against tick-transmitted Borrelia burgdorferi for more than one year. The researchers used a parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5) vector to deliver the vaccine, which showed higher levels of serum antibody and neutralization activity compared to a parenteral recombinant OspA vaccine. Mice vaccinated with the PIV5-delivered OspA vaccine had fewer breakthrough infections when challenged with infected ticks carrying B. burgdorferi. These findings suggest that the PIV5-delivered OspA vaccine may offer longer-lasting protection against Lyme disease. [Extracted from the article]
