Abstract

A recent research study conducted at An-Najah National University explored the phytoconstituents, antimicrobial potency, and cytotoxic effects of essential oil from Origanum punonense, a traditional medicinal plant used by Bedouins in the Dead Sea region. The study found that the essential oil contains 44 phytochemical compounds, with carvacrol being the main component. The oil demonstrated strong antimicrobial activity against various bacterial and fungal species, including those causing diabetic foot infections. The researchers concluded that the essential oil of Origanum punonense could be an effective treatment for infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients with chronic comorbidities like cancer and diabetes mellitus.
