Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is having a significant impact on the auto body industry, improving the estimating process and enhancing the customer experience. AI is being used in computer vision, where computers analyze images to assist with estimating and determining if a car is a total loss. Mitchell International has developed Intelligent Estimating, an AI-based claims automation solution that eliminates the need for human intervention. AI can also review estimates and provide judgments on repair decisions. Tractable, a company collaborating with Mitchell, uses its proprietary computer vision technology to automatically generate estimates from photos of collision damage. AI technology is allowing body shops to curate a better customer experience and become trusted advisors. CCC Intelligent Solutions has also been using AI to streamline work in the automotive ecosystem, including estimating and assessing repair damage. CCC's Repair Cost Predictor provides instant estimates to consumers based on uploaded photos of the damage. The company's Jumpstart IQ solution uses AI to determine the location of damage on a vehicle and prompts human estimators to add additional operations or hidden damage. The challenge lies in raising awareness among collision customers about the existence and benefits of AI technology. Overall, AI has clear benefits for consumers, insurers, and repairers in the collision repair process. [Extracted from the article]
