Abstract

The article discusses the work of genetic engineering pioneer Kevin Esvelt which highlights his contributions to biotechnology, particularly in evolving biomolecules in the laboratory and developing techniques to shape the evolutionary trajectories of species in the wild. It addresses the potential for good of these technologies and the risks of catastrophe if misused. Also noted are Esvelt's early fascination with evolution and his phage-assisted continued evolution (PACE) system.
