Abstract

Polymer composite materials (PCMs) are of great interest due to a range of advantages that make them attractive for use in various structures and products. However, due to the specific features of their structure, these materials require monitoring systems to ensure their reliability and safety. Acoustic emission (AE) detection is one of the methods for monitoring PCMs. In this context, the task of determining the location of the AE source is of particular interest. This study conducted numerical simulation of the AE propagation process in a polymer composite material. The simulation results demonstrated that a use of a network of distributed fiber-optic sensors integrated into the PCMs allows for the successful detection and localization of AE with the aim of preventing and predicting the potential failure of composites.
