Abstract

A recent study conducted by the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center found that commonly used treatments for insomnia, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-I) and the antidepressant drug trazodone, did not significantly improve symptoms in dialysis patients. The study, which included 126 participants, divided them into three groups: one receiving CBT-I, one receiving trazodone, and one receiving a placebo. The results showed no demonstrable effect from either intervention. The study also detected a higher risk of serious cardiac complications in patients prescribed trazodone. The researchers suggest that the failure of these treatments may be due to other sleep issues or interactions with multiple medications that dialysis patients often take.
